The Best Headphones for Runners

Some people love to run and listen to the sounds around them.

The rest of us need jams, books on tapes, and podcasts to help us survive.

If you’re a runner who likes to run with your phone so you can listen to music, your favorite podcasts or books on tape, these are my tried and true favorite headphones to run in:

If You’re Looking For A Deal

Mpow Flame Bluetooth Headphones Wireless Sport Earbuds, $26.99

I bought these right before the Chicago Marathon last year because the forecast said rain. They’re sweatproof and water-resistant so now I use this pair of headphones on the run whenever it’s raining out. The sound isn’t great but it gets the job done.

If You Want The Best Headphones Available

Apple Airpods, $139

Expensive? Yes. Are they the newest design? No.

I too held off on investing in a pair of Apple Airpods because I drop everything and I knew one of these would end up on the subway tracks. 2 years and hundreds of sweaty miles later, not only did I never lose them, the left one only just broke. AND now they’re on sale. If you’re looking for the best headphones around, go with these.

Apple Airpods Pro, $249

I can’t bring myself to buy the Airpods Pro but I’ve never met anyone who hasn’t sung their praises. So I am including them on the list.

If You Want The Best Sound, Chord-less but Secure On Your Ear, and Water Resistant

Powerbeats Pro True Wireless In-Ear Earphones, $250

If you’re looking for a secure fit and PHENOMENAL sound quality, these are for you. Expensive? Yes. BUT, they last. Don’t take these in the rain but they’ll survive your sweaty summer runs.

If You Want Waterproof, A Chord, and Great Sound

Jaybird X4 Wireless Headphones, $129

They’re waterproof and sweatproof and they have a chord. They’re great. Five stars.

If You Want Waterproof, A Chord, and Incredible Sound

Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones, $99

What can be said for Bose? They really are the best. The sound is incredible, they have a chord if you’re nervous about losing a bud/pod, and they are perfect for summer. Highly recommend. Five stars.

If you’re looking to hear your surroundings…

AfterShokz Aeropex - Sweat Resistant Wireless Earphones for Workouts and Running with Built in Mic, $129

I bought these for my Mom for Christmas and she didn’t like them so she gave them to me. I wear them when my airpods are dead or when I ride my bike. But truthfully, I don’t love them. It’s loud enough that it’s hard to hear what’s around you (in my opinion) but not loud enough to enjoy it. But, I love the concept. They’re not terrible, just not great. (In my opinion. People love them though so I’m including them on the list.)
