10 Reasons You Should Join The BALG Training Team

You Aren’t Alone

What’s it like belonging to the BALG Training Team? You have a global network of women to check in with, commiserate with, lean on, support, laugh and cry with, cheer for, problem solve with, and learn with. While I wish we could all live close enough to run together, for many of us, we don’t have a BALG to run with IRL. Having a community to hop on coaching calls with every week is a GAME CHANGER. It’s the only zoom call you’ll actually look forward to! AND, we have tons of events to join throughout the year so that you can run together IRL!!!!

Affordable Coaching

COACHING IS EXPENSIVE! Don’t believe us? Here are some examples.

-Coaching with one of Peloton instructor Matt Wilpers team of coaches costs between $399-$625 A MONTH. (WHAAAAAAAAAT?!)

-Coaching with McMillon is $199 a month

-Coaching with Marathon Training Academy is $199 a month.

-Coaching with McKirdy Trained costs $119-$179 with a 6-12 month commitment

Are all these coaching programs worth the money? ABSOLUTELY! They’re great! But we know that coaching is expensive. Our model isn’t set up to do 1 on 1 coaching on purpose. We do it to keep coaching expensive. (And to be honest, it’s more effective.) Not only do you get access to multiple coaching calls every week, but you can purchase 1:1 coaching calls as a member of the BALG team if you need that extra time.

The Badass Lady Gang Training Team was born because Coach Kelly saw how limiting 1 on 1 coaching was. Coach Kelly discovered that what her athletes really needed was…

Vicarious Learning

Vicarious learning is what happens when you learn from other people’s experiences. Imagine a coaching call with a bunch of your BALG team members. These team members all have different backgrounds and relationships to running. Some have been running for years, others are brand new. Getting to hear what they’re going through and experiencing, even when you haven’t experienced it yourself, is a HUGE GIFT because progress isn’t linear. We learn and relearn lessons over and over and over again. We are constantly redefining our strength and what we think we’re capable of. Most of the work we do in the BALG isn’t about getting faster or stronger, it’s around reframing thoughts, habits, and working to understand why we make the choices we make.

Having the opportunity to learn with and from one another is WILDLY TRANSFORMATIVE and in our opinion, one of the best ways to coach and train.

More Fun

You know the Buddhist saying, “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional”? It’s great and true but very few training programs focus on helping their athletes understand why we choose to suffer. You can’t have fun if you’re struggling as much as most of us do.

Here at the Badass Lady Gang, we are HUGE believers in making training as much fun as humanly possible. Running for life and enjoying making movement a positive part of your everyday life is the goal and it’s only possible if you’re having fun. Racing and working towards running related outcome goals are just a piece of that fun.

Don’t Just Get A Training Plan To blindly Follow, Understand How They Work So You Can Train For Life

We know you aren’t going to follow our training plans to a T. We don’t want you to! YOU’RE BUSY! Shit happens! If there’s one thing you can expect, it’s that your training is going to be imperfect. You aren’t a professional athlete. This isn’t your job. Hell, you probably don’t have time to train for a race but you signed up anyways! That’s ok. We’ve all been there.

We don’t just want to help you adapt your training when you miss a week (or two) or a few days, we want you to understand how training plans work so that you can feel good about the choices you’re making. Not only will you have a coach to guide you and adapt your training (we know you’re busy and what is the point of having a coach if you can’t ask for help), but we want you to understand how and why the plan is structured the way it is.

Approachable Training

That being said, all of our training plans are created to meet you where you are. SO MANY ATHLETES overtrain because their training plans weren’t created for a 10-20+ minute miler. Our training plans aren’t just approachable, THEY’RE SAFE. NO MORE OVERTRAINING! No more insanely long long runs! No more cookie cutter training plans that weren’t created with runners who don’t run under a 9 minute mile in mind. Which is almost all of them.

Our women are everyday athletes. They run 8-22 minute miles. They’re first time half marathoners and serial marathoners. They’re women who have literally no desire to ever run a race and just run for fun. They’re women chasing big goals like breaking 2 or 3 hours in a half marathon or break 4 hours in a marathon and BQ. We have women of all different backgrounds and that’s what makes it special.

You don’t need a race or goal to be involved. We welcome women of all athletic levels.

Understand How Your Physiology Can Influence Your Training

As women, our hormones influence our training and lives. You don’t need us to tell you that, but it’s important to note because it’s hard to find training that focuses on helping you work with your physiology as women. Whether you’re peri-menopausal, menopausal, or experience a menstrual cycle, we help our athletes understand how you can use your physiology to your advantage.

Running coaching by women, for women.

Be Apart Of A Community

Here at the Badass Lady Gang, we don’t want you training for something 365 days a year and we sure as hell don’t want you to feel like you can only join coaching calls if you’re training for something. Running is just something you enjoy, it’s not who you are. Our coaching calls are the epitome of life with a side of running. It’s a really beautiful place to go where you can be yourself and talk about what you’re going through not just in your running, but in your life.

Running That’s More Than Goal Chasing

Goals are great! They’re fun to chase! They give us something to work towards but they’re only a supporting character. We want all of our athletes to feel confident taking time away from goals. Being a runner, athlete, or someone who is physically active is so much more than always having something to work towards. We want you to feel just as confident about being able to feel good about waking up and asking yourself, “How do I want to move today?”, as you are chasing that seemingly impossible moonshot goal.

It’s More Than Just Running

Our philosophy isn’t about helping our athletes get stronger or faster. It’s just not.

Will you get stronger and faster during training? HELL YEAH! But that’s not what running is all about.

You can absolutely go find a coach or program that focuses on that. But in our opinion, you’ll be robbing yourself of everything running has to offer.

Kelly Roberts

Head coach and creator of the Badass Lady Gang, Kelly Roberts’ pre-BALG fitness routine consisted mostly of struggling through the elliptical and trying to shrink her body. It wasn’t until hitting post-college life, poised with a theatre degree, student loans, and the onset of panic, that she found running. Running forced Kelly to ditch perfectionism and stomp out fear of failure. Viral selfies from the nyc half marathon struck a chord with women who could relate to the struggle, and soon the women’s running community Badass Lady Gang was born.

BALG is about enjoying life with a side of running. Kelly’s philosophy measures success by confidence gained, not pounds lost. If you aren’t having fun, it’s time to pivot. Kelly is an RRCA certified coach and has completed Dr. Stacy Sims ‘Women Are Not Small Men’ certification course helping coaches better serve their female athletes. Over the years Kelly has coached thousands of women from brand new runners to those chasing Boston marathon qualifying times, appeared on the cover of Women’s Running Magazine, joined Nike at the Women’s World Cup, and created a worldwide body image empowerment movement called the Sports Bra Squad. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
