Everything You Need To Gear Up For Your Next Run

Whoever said running was simple because all you need is a pair of shoes didn’t have big boobs and thighs that touch.

I wish running were that simple! But the truth is, you need more than just a good pair of running shoes if you want to actually enjoy running. Whether you’re just getting started or you’re training for a race, good running gear makes a HUGE difference.

Running Pants

Let’s start with running pants (also called running tights or leggings). My three rules for running leggings:

  1. They have to be dark to hide my crotch sweat

  2. They HAVE to have pockets for my phone and treasures

  3. They have to be high waisted

    Running tights

Easily one of the best pair of leggings around, these leggings are tried and true by women with thick thighs.

Old Navy High-Waisted PowerSoft 7/8 Leggings

Looking for affordable tights that will last? DON’T SLEEP ON OLD NAVY. Their power-soft leggings and shorts are favorites among runners of all sizes.

Running Shorts

When I first started running, I never wore running shorts because I didn’t know they didn’t come in any length other than THAT WILL MAKE MY THIGHS BLEED. But long running shorts exist! And turns out, Dick’s Sporting Goods GENUINELY makes one of the best pairs in the game. Inexpensive, comfortable, good looking, high waisted, AND they have pockets. SLAM DUNK. My rules for running shorts for runners with thick thighs:

  1. They have to be 7” or longer

  2. They have to be high waisted

  3. They have to have pockets

Old Navy High-Waisted PowerSoft Biker Shorts -- 8-inch inseam

One of the best pair of shorts around, not only do they last, but they’re comfortable, affordable, AND they have pockets.

Athleta Salutation Stash High Rise 7 Inch Short

A crowd favorite by many, the Athleta stash short is long, comfortable, and has pockets.

CRZ YOGA Womens Butterluxe Biker Shorts with Pockets 3'' / 5'' / 8'' - High Waisted Volleyball Workout Yoga Shorts

I always feel awful posting Amazon products because Bezos is truly evil. But $20 shorts…I pick my battles. These are great.

Running Shoes

Finding the perfect pair of running shoes may seem tricky, but don’t be intimidated. The trick to finding a good pair of running shoes is to figure out what size you wear in each individual pair of shoes. I have a wide foot so I tend to wear men’s shoes but I’m a men’s size 9.5 in Nike Pegasus, a men’s size 10 in Saucony Endorphin Pro 2, and a women’s 10.5 in the Ultraboost. You won’t know how something fits until you try it on. For that reason, I’m not recommending any. It’s too personal. You have to go into a store and get fitted.

Here’s how to find a great running shoe:

  1. Get measured in store

  2. When you get measured matters. Your feet swell throughout the day AND when you run. Try to go shoe shopping towards the end of the day.

  3. Your shoes should feel like they disappear on the run. If they cause any discomfort, you might be in the wrong size.

  4. Make sure your shoe is wide enough for your foot.

  5. Super shoes are amazing for long runs. (The Endorphin Pro by Saucony and the next% by Nike are my favorite super shoes. Super shoes have a carbon plate inside and make you run faster. It’s amazing.)

High Support Sports Bra

Finding the Perfect Sports Bra for Running: A Comprehensive Guide

Selecting the right sports bra for running is crucial to prevent discomfort, pain, chafing, and potential damage to breast tissue. Here are our top tips to help you find the ideal sports bra for your running needs:

  1. Get the Right Size: Ensuring your sports bra fits properly is essential. Refer to the sizing guide above to check your measurements before purchasing.

  2. Opt for High-Impact Bras: Running is a high-impact activity that can cause significant breast movement. Choose bras labeled as high-impact, which offer ample adjustability and are specifically designed for running. This will help minimize bouncing and prevent chafing.

  3. Check the Support: Look for a bra that provides excellent support to keep your breasts stable while you run. Features like a wide band and adjustable straps are crucial for a customized fit. Remember, adjustability is key!

  4. Choose Moisture-Wicking Fabric: Avoid cotton as it retains moisture. The best sports bras are made from moisture-wicking fabric that keeps you cool and dry by drawing sweat away from your skin.

  5. Try Before You Buy: It’s important to try on sports bras before purchasing. Perform activities like jumping or running in place to see how the bra feels in motion.

  6. Consider the Style: Understanding different sports bra styles is important for comfort. Compression bras press the breasts against the chest, while encapsulation bras have individual cups for each breast. Choose the style that best suits your comfort preferences.

  7. Invest in Quality: While high-quality sports bras may be more expensive than regular bras, they are worth the investment to protect your breasts and ensure comfort during your runs.

  8. Care Instructions: Always avoid putting your sports bras in the dryer to maintain their shape and functionality.

By following these tips, you can find a sports bra that offers the support and comfort you need for a successful and enjoyable run.

Enell Sport High Impact Sports Bra

If you have big boobs and you’re looking for a supportive sports bra, look not further. Enell is easily the most supportive sports bra out there.

Run Times Bra High Support, B-G Cups

If you’re looking for an H back sports bra, this is one of the best ones on the market.

Women's UA Infinity High Sports Bra 2.0

The new Under Armour 2.0 High Infinity sports bra can be worn both as an H back or Cross Back. This is one of the best sports bras around.

KT Tape For Your Bra Line To Prevent Sports Bras Chafing

There isn’t a sports bra on this earth that won’t cause chafing during runs longer than 60 minutes. It doesn’t exist. My advice, wear KT tape on your bra line and under your boobs during runs longer than 2 hours. Sometimes under the tops of the straps. KT tape is a life saver.

KT TAPE PRO EXTREME Kinesiology Tape

The only way to truly prevent sports bra chafing during those long, long runs or half & full marathons is to put kt tape on your bra line.

Chafe cream to prevent chafing.

Like the old saying goes, if. you love it, lube it. Lube everything. Upstairs. Downstairs. If it rubs, lube it.

Body Glide Anti Chife Balm

If you love it, lube it. Body glide is tried and true.

Megababe Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafe Stick

My favorite chafe cream? Megababe. The best.

Socks

The rule for socks is simple: COTTON IS THE ENEMY. I prefer socks with a tab on the back to prevent chafing.

Bombas Women's All-Purpose Performance Ankle Sock 3-Pack

I love Bombas because they last forever and they donate a pair to someone experiencing homelessness. Comfort and a good cause? The best running socks.

GPS Watch

Don’t get overwhelmed by running watches. First, identify what you want to track. Just running? Or do you want swimming, cycling, and other activities as well? Do you want music on your watch? Then, make sure it has a good GPS. Personally, I think Garmin forerunners are the best. You can’t go wrong with a forerunner.

Garmin Forerunner 165 GPS Running Smartwatch

Tried and true, a basic forerunner is one of the best running watches to start with.

Foam Roller

Part torture device, part must-have item. A foam roller is a VERY important tool in a runner’’s tool belt. The best time to foam roll is whenever you can get yourself to foam roll. The second best time to foam roll is before you run.

TriggerPoint GRID 1.0 Foam Roller

One of the most important tools you will need as a runner, don’t just buy your foam roller. USE IT.

There you have it! That is EVERYTHING you need to gear up for your next run.

Kelly Roberts

Head coach and creator of the Badass Lady Gang, Kelly Roberts’ pre-BALG fitness routine consisted mostly of struggling through the elliptical and trying to shrink her body. It wasn’t until hitting post-college life, poised with a theatre degree, student loans, and the onset of panic, that she found running. Running forced Kelly to ditch perfectionism and stomp out fear of failure. Viral selfies from the nyc half marathon struck a chord with women who could relate to the struggle, and soon the women’s running community Badass Lady Gang was born.

BALG is about enjoying life with a side of running. Kelly’s philosophy measures success by confidence gained, not pounds lost. If you aren’t having fun, it’s time to pivot. Kelly is an RRCA certified coach and has completed Dr. Stacy Sims ‘Women Are Not Small Men’ certification course helping coaches better serve their female athletes. Over the years Kelly has coached thousands of women from brand new runners to those chasing Boston marathon qualifying times, appeared on the cover of Women’s Running Magazine, joined Nike at the Women’s World Cup, and created a worldwide body image empowerment movement called the Sports Bra Squad. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
