How To Keep Your Mind And Body Strong During Your Pregnancy
Did you say you’re pregnant?--congratulations! And, you’re you a runner too?
I’m Coach Amanda and I’m the Badass Lady Gang’s newest running coach and yoga instructor! I’m here to help you stay strong in mind and body during your pregnancy.
First, I want you to start with defining YOUR principles.
A principle is “a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system or belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.”
During my year-long functional movement fellowship with The Gray Institute, I learned the importance of this concept. I have defined six principles to help manage my running and pregnancy through all three trimesters. Who knows, they might resonate for you too!
One: I’m becoming a mother and will be raising a brand new human for the first time. I need to face my past, manage my anxiety and prepare for the biggest life change I’ve ever faced.
Two: Yoga postures feel different in my body with increased baby weight gain and fatigue. Modifying the way I practice yoga postures helps me stay in alignment with my physical practice.
Three: As my baby grows larger, my abdomen has grown significantly. To protect both my son and my body, I’ve made significant changes in my approach to yoga postures and breathing.
Four: Increases in certain hormones, mainly relaxin, have increased the laxity of my joints in preparation for childbirth. With increased laxity, I’ve stopped practicing deep and long stretches to protect my joints and increased dynamic, strength-building sequences.
Five: I’m experiencing shortness of breath due to changes to my hormones and the growth of my baby. I’ve adopted alternative yoga breathing techniques to calm my nervous system.
Six: I’m a pregnant endurance athlete who plans to continue running in pregnancy and after postpartum recovery; I want my yoga practice to support this!
If you’re looking for a yoga teacher with all the answers to tell you exactly what you need to be doing during pregnancy, you’ve come to the WRONG place. I believe that your wisdom-body (called vijnanamaya kosha in sanskrit) knows best and I’m here to empower you to tap into this inner wisdom and make the best decisions for YOU, YOUR BODY, YOUR BABY.
