So You Want to start a balg chapter?
While we’d LOVE to have millions of chapters all over the world under the Badass Lady Gang, we know it takes a lot more than just starting one and giving you access to the Instagram handle. Below will detail the steps you’ll need to take if you want to create your own.
minimum requirements
Ability to be inclusive
Every chapter meet-up is free and open to any womxn-identifying individual regardless of race, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, fitness levels, and body size. Leaders must be able to create inclusive environments that allow members to feel comfortable. We get it - people are shy in new situations! It’s up to leaders to make new members feel welcome and bring them into the fold.
TWO dedicated co-leaders
EVERY chapter must have TWO co-leaders, and both co-leaders must be present at weekly meetups and share responsibilities equally. This is to prevent burnout and so that every no leader feels like they’re doing everything themselves.
A 1-3 Month Trial Period
Applications for new BALG chapters will go out every spring. BEFORE you even apply to be an official chapter, you must prove that you can host weekly meetups with solid attendance. We recommend starting this ASAP so that by the time you’re ready to apply, you already have a system going.
A Basic understanding of instagram
Our chapters mainly use Instagram and BALGcommunity.com as a form of communication. When you apply, you should demonstrate an ability to use Instagram to share meetup information as well as group selfies and pictures.
BONUS: Knowing how to use reels and Canva!
Willingness to be a team player
Once in a blue moon we’ll want to do something will all leaders whether it be a virtual meet-up or group reel/post. If you’re the kind of person who ignores group chats and never answers, you may want to reconsider.
The process of becoming a balg chapter
Find Your co-leader
Use your trial period to figure out how you can collaborate, work together, effectively communicate, and troubleshoot so that you can create a strong chapter. You never know what life will throw at you; you want to make sure your co-leader is someone you can rely on and vice versa!
Choose a weekly meetup date
We find chapters do best when they pick a consistent time and place for meetups. Make sure your meetup location is easily accessible and your day of the week/time is something both leaders can reliably attend. Use your trial period to trouble shoot the best days and times!
Start an Instagram for communication
While you cannot use an official BALG handle just yet, we recommend starting an Instagram to start getting your name out there and communicating with potential new members! Our current chapters typically post a graphic for meet-up information as well as photos from the meet-up. This is a good time to practice your group photo skills :)
invite women to your meetup
Invite members to your meetup! You’re more than welcome to post in BALGcommunity.com to see if fellow BALGers are in the area. We also recommend connecting with your local running community and getting creative with getting your group out there.
Chapters have done everything from posting bulletin ads in local stores to making fans with QR codes to handout at local races. Get creative!
Show growth & attendance for at least 1-3 months
During the first 1-2 month period, we’re looking to see growth. We want to see that you can use your existing network and branch outside of it to bring people together regularly. Being a leader is a HUGE undertaking.
If chosen to lead, you’ll be asked to post on your BALG chapter’s Instagram regularly, continue to grow your chapter, connect with other groups in your community, and host a meetup at least once a week. Remember - you’re going to be representing Badass Lady Gang!
Apply to become an official chapter
Applications for new chapters are announced every spring and is ultimately decided by Coach Kelly. If you’ve already done the above, it’ll be a super easy and smooth process.
Once you’re an official chapter, you’ll get all the perks of being a leader as well as have access to all our tools and support!
