The Best Way To Chase New Years Resolutions and Goals in 2022

2022 is here which means it’s time for the internet to go ham on motivational content urging you to set goals and intentions for the following 365 days.

MAKE A BIG CHANGE!

THIS IS YOUR YEAR!

START JANUARY 1 ON THE RIGHT FOOT.

You know, all that “New Year New You” content.

My advice? Roll with what you’re feeling. There have been years where the momentum of a new year helped me establish some new habits for myself. But for every year that I felt inspired by a new year resolution, I’ve also felt indifferent.

You make a change when you want to make a change. Whether that’s January 1 or some other day in 2022, what matters more than knowing the goal you’re working towards is understanding why you want it, the feelings you're working towards, and the habits necessary to make that goal a reality.

Want to become a runner? Why? What does it take to become a runner?

Want to get faster? Why? What needs to happen in order to run faster?

Want to run a marathon? Why? What does someone need to do in order to run a marathon and stay healthy?

Want to break 2 hours in the half marathon? Why? What will breaking 2 hours say about you? What does success look like?

Gang, there is nothing I love more than a huge moonshot goal. But this year, I challenge you to do more than just chase goals. I want you to dive deeper into the type of person you’re working to become.

Start small.

What is one thing you can do today?

If you’re looking to feel less stressed and overwhelmed in the New Year, what is one thing you can do today to work towards making that goal a reality? Can you make a to-do list first thing in the morning? Can you meditate for 5 minutes? Can you make your bed?

If you’re looking to become a runner or “get in shape”, can you go for a walk? Or start my free 8-week become a runner running plan?

If you think you need to lose weight, can you take a second to flesh out why? What made you think you need to lose weight? How do you feel? How do you want to feel? What is one thing you can do today to help you feel that way without focusing on weight loss? Can you move in a way that makes you feel good? Can you go on a walk with a friend? Can you sign up for my free become a runner 8-week training plan? Can you meal prep or plan delicious, nourishing, satisfying meals for the week that won’t leave you in a low energy availability (AKA calorie deficit) state? If you’re chasing weight loss, I challenge you to focus on how you want to feel and what you can do to feel that way TODAY in lieu of restricting diets and overexercising.

If you want to run faster, sign up for our 8-week 2-miler training experience that kicks off on January 10th! We’ll spend 8-weeks focusing on strength work and a training plan that will help you get back into running, run regularly, and feel stronger and more confident running faster! If you’ve ever wondered how do I get faster or how do I feel stronger running, this is the training experience for you!

If you want to have more fun running or train for a race, join the Badass Lady Gang training team! Affordable coaching and the support of a team! WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK FOR!?!

Regardless of what you’re yearning to accomplish or work towards in 2022, start with what feeling you’re chasing, what success looks like, and what you can do TODAY to make it happen.

Change doesn’t happen overnight. True, sustainable change comes when you know who you are, who you want to work to become, why you want it, and what you can do today to make it happen.

Start small. Start where you are. And make sure you’re having fun.

Just remember, today is always the day.

Happy new year gang!

Love,

Kelly Roberts

Head coach and creator of the Badass Lady Gang, Kelly Roberts’ pre-BALG fitness routine consisted mostly of struggling through the elliptical and trying to shrink her body. It wasn’t until hitting post-college life, poised with a theatre degree, student loans, and the onset of panic, that she found running. Running forced Kelly to ditch perfectionism and stomp out fear of failure. Viral selfies from the nyc half marathon struck a chord with women who could relate to the struggle, and soon the women’s running community Badass Lady Gang was born.

BALG is about enjoying life with a side of running. Kelly’s philosophy measures success by confidence gained, not pounds lost. If you aren’t having fun, it’s time to pivot. Kelly is an RRCA certified coach and has completed Dr. Stacy Sims ‘Women Are Not Small Men’ certification course helping coaches better serve their female athletes. Over the years Kelly has coached thousands of women from brand new runners to those chasing Boston marathon qualifying times, appeared on the cover of Women’s Running Magazine, joined Nike at the Women’s World Cup, and created a worldwide body image empowerment movement called the Sports Bra Squad. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
